Gateway Awarded Grant for College Preparation
In 2007, the Gateway Institute was one of a select group of organizations invited by the Shippy Foundation to submit a proposal for consideration. Gateway drew on its long history of working with college-bound students and was awarded a one-year grant for its proposed project to increase the number of students qualifying for admission to selective colleges and to medical school and PhD programs.
In January forty high school juniors, with exemplary academic achievements, were invited to participate in this select program. The Gateway Shippy Scholars program will provide them with a wide-range of opportunities and services as they pursue college and career opportunities. The program will offer its participants as much as it expects of them. Some of these benefits include trips to highly-competitive and Ivy League colleges, guaranteed internships, subsidizing of standardized test fees, individualized college advisement, and numerous networking opportunities. In September, another forty students will be invited to join the program.
The Shippy Foundation seeks to support projects that help close the socio-economic and racial achievement gap in education. The Foundation funds innovative schools, school-based programs and after-school programs for children in grades pre-K through 12.
Shippy students meet at the 19th Annual College Fair to review their progress and discuss upcoming events.
